She was running.

Running for her life. She turned right into a street, dimly lit and lonely. As she ran, she looked to her right and to her left; she felt as if her shadow was chasing her. Terrified, she ran faster.

Her legs were getting tired, and she was breathing heavily. She slowed down.

A car pulled over in front of her. She stopped running, and balanced herself on the hood of the car. The door of the car opened, and a man stepped out. She couldn’t see his face; the shadows hid it.

He spoke in a hoarse voice,

“Let me explain everything.”

And a scream pierced the stillness of the night.
